TS Road Transport Authority (RTA) will soon start regularising ownership of old autos by the end of this month or July first week. The move comes after the RTA realised the need to have a check on the ownership of three-wheelers, which is seldom transferred by financiers after they seize the vehicles from its present owners
The process, which will be done jointly with the Traffic police, comes after holding meetings with auto unions and financiers over the past several weeks to discuss the issue of transferring the ownership of autos to its present drivers/owners. Senior RTA officials informed that the drive would be held at the Goshamahal police grounds, as different counters have to be set up for the same.
“Notices will be sent to the Road Transport Offices (RTO) by the financiers against the owners of autos, stating that they have not paid their dues, or that they are not in contact with the financing companies. After we receive the notice, we will send it to the owner to respond within 14 days or that the ownership will be given to the financier,” explained a senior official.

The official mentioned that the ownership of the auto can be transferred to the financiers if the registered owner does not turn up as per the Motor Vehicle Act (MV). The decision to streamline old autos is being done to aid the police in tracking three-wheelers involved in crimes, to send e-challans to violators and also for women safety in case any untoward incidents take place.
Until now, a financier would seize a vehicle from its registered owner for non-payment of dues, and would sell it to another driver, without transferring ownership of the vehicle. This resulted in several problems for the police and RTA officials, who found it hard to trace the present owners if the auto or its owner got involved in accident or criminal offence.
RTA officials said that once the regularisation begins, the financiers will themselves bring the autos and their present owners, as they have information about them.
