An NRI approached the State Human Rights Commission on Monday alleging brutality at the hands of city police.
According to 37-year-old M. Vasu, a resident of Mahendra Hills, the Musheerabad police “confined” and “tortured” him along with his three friends for 16 hours.
In the petition, Mr. Vasu said that they had halted in Musheerabad in the wee hours of June 25 to drop a friend when a police team on two-wheelers approached them.

He alleged that the policemen spoke in a rude manner and when he and his friends raised objection, they physically assaulted them.
Another police team arrived in a patrol car and bundled the complainants into the vehicle and took them to Musheerabad police station. Mr. Vasu alleged that more than a dozen policemen took turns to beat them at the police station resulting in grievous injuries to them.
They were also threatened with dire consequences if they failed to offer a “huge bribe”.

Accepting the case, the Commission directed the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, to submit a report by July 16.
When contacted, Musheerabad Inspector Mohan Rao, who has also been named in the complaint, admitted that the police staff had beaten up the complainants, but pointed out that they were in an inebriated state.
“We are investigating the matter as a complaint has been lodged. We will take stringent action against the police officials if found guilty.”
