At a time when most people are worried about the escalating monthly power bills, here is a man who claims that his ceiling fan would help to reduce power consumption drastically.
“Generally, a ceiling fan requires 230 V power supply, but I developed a 6V DC motor, which is similar to that of a mobile phone charger. My fan can be operated using this power supply without any problems,” says A. Jayeswar Rao from Gorantla village of Anantapur district.
Usually, conventional fans consume one unit of power after running for about four hours, and at this rate, nearly five units of power are required to operate one ceiling fan in a house a day. But this fan, which is operated with a 6V DC motor, consumes just five units of power a month, claims Mr. Rao.

“I made some changes, including usage of special bearings, reduced use of copper wire and other adjustments to make this fan run with 6V power supply. I am applying for patent rights,” explains Mr. Rao while presenting a demo at his workshop in Balanagar.
Where it weighs over the others
The fan has many advantages. It weighs less compared to the conventional fan, and the motor does not get hot quickly, and it costs much less than the regular fan, he says.

“I worked for a year on this project. If the government supports this project, a fan can be manufactured at a cost of about Rs. 2,000 per piece as against the branded fan’s cost of Rs. 3000,” says Mr. Rao (Ph: 97001-13301).
With power backup
It also comes with a 1.5-hour back-up power facility to operate fan during power cuts. A four-AA rechargeable battery pack is fixed as an inbuilt component in the regulator, adds Mr. Rao, who has only studied up to 10 class.
