Food items being sold at exorbitant prices, say officials

Officials from Legal Metrology checking prices and weight of food items at a multiplex in the city on Sunday.

Legal Metrology Department officials on Sunday raided 15 multiplexes in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts and registered 105 cases against persons managing them.

The respective management representatives were booked for not mentioning the quantity and price on food and beverages.

Raids were conducted at Prasads IMAX, GVK One INOX, PVR Hyderabad Central, PVR Inorbit, PVR Forum Manjeera Mall and Leonia Carnival, among others.

Explaining the rationale behind the surprise checks, officials said several consumers had come forward to lodge complaints against these multiplexes.

They said several food and beverage items were being sold at exorbitant prices.

“There were 15 teams which set out on the raids based on consumer complaints. We found that neither weight nor price was mentioned on popcorn and on soft drink glasses. We have booked cases as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules of 2012,” said Assistant Controller (Hyderabad) R. G. Bhasker Reddy.

Officials found a weighing machine had allegedly been tampered at one of the multiplexes.

Controller of Legal Metrology Akun Sabharwal said all packaged items should display the maximum retail price and quantity.
