‘Every 5 minutes an innocent man is arrested on a false complaint'

Married men top the list of suicides with one ending his life every 8.4 minutes for facing false dowry harassment charges, claimed the Save Indian Family Foundation here, on Saturday.

The foundation, which is fighting for men’s rights, said that on an average, every five minutes an innocent man was arrested based on a ‘false’ complaint lodged by the wife.

Ninety-eight per cent of dowry harassment cases were found to be false after years of litigation, the foundation members said while addressing participants at a demonstration held at Indira Park here, today.

The dharna was organised to protest against what they called ‘grave injustice’ done to men in connection with dowry cases.

Holding placards with the slogans ‘stop violence against men’ and ‘say no to male bashing,’ members of the foundation criticised the police for their inept handling of dowry cases.

The police, in collusion with the complainant’s family, were harassing men forcing them to concede to their wives’ demands which mostly revolve around giving money or property to settle the matter, the people claimed.

These days, policemen are even going to offices of the harassed husbands in order to defame them and try to arrest them without verifying the complainant’s allegations, foundation city convenor Shah Ali Ahmed said.
