An unidentified man in his mid 30s got washed away in a drain at Madhusudhan Reddy Nagar of Jeedimetla even as residents of the locality tried to rescue him with a cable here on Saturday.
Residents and passers-by were shocked to see the man being swept away as their efforts to bring him out safely from the swirling drain water failed. “The identity of the person is not yet known. He was spotted moving in the locality in the afternoon,” Jeedimetla Inspector C. Shankar Reddy said.
People living in the area, who had spoken to him earlier, suspect that he was under the influence of alcohol. On seeing him moving suspiciously along the nala, they called him to a side, counselled and sent him away, saying it was dangerous to move closely to the open drain which was nearly 20 feet wide.

“Around 4.30 p.m., he suddenly jumped into the drain but managed to catch hold of a raised concrete structure,” the Inspector said. People living in the locality hurled a cable towards him, asking him to catch it to reach the shore.
The man caught the end of the cable but was unable to withstand the pressure of the water swirling at a high speed. Even as onlookers asked him to be careful and keep his grip on the cable, he slipped into the water and got swept away even as others watched helplessly.
Jeedimetla police, GHMC workers and others searched for him along the drain for two kilometres but could not find the man. Search was on to trace him.
