Demitting the office of Mayor after 35 month tenure, Mohammed Majid Hussain on Wednesday said great challenges lay ahead to work for comprehensive development of Hyderabad and make it a model city.
Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Majid Hussain said his tenure was marked with efforts to transform the GHMC into a truly metropolitan civic body with focus on development of its civic infrastructure and welfare of residents. The standing committee had taken a decision to waive off property tax on the individual residential houses up to Rs.4,000 per annum and the same is under consideration of State government. Stating this, he hoped that the issue would be considered favourably by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. “The GHMC is in a financially strong position to take the step for the benefit of the lower and middle class households,” he quipped.
In the last three years, the revenue income of the civic body has gone up from Rs.1,370.35 crore (2011-12) to Rs.2,212.94 crore (2013-14), Mr.Majid Hussain said.

“When I took up the office, the GHMC made a modest surplus of Rs.160.26 crore and had a huge overdraft. We cleared loans and made a surplus of Rs. 231.41 crore despite a big hike in expenditure,” he said. The Greater Hyderabad Development Plan was also launched to provide improved civic infrastructure with construction of flyovers, railway under bridges and over bridges, widening of roads and junction improvements, Mr. Majid Hussain added.
