Named after the garden in which Lord Buddha was born, Lumbini Park remains a retreat which provides a much need lung space and recreational area for people in the bustling city of Hyderabad. Nestled in close proximity to one of the city’s most famous landmarks (Tank Bund), it is an ideal destination to unwind, especially for families with young children.
Developed by Hyderabad Urban Development Authority in 1994 and spread over 7.5 acres, its central location has ensured that it remains a perennially popular destination with tourists as well as city dwellers looking for a brief respite from the mundane. The spacious setting has enabled the creation of a budget friendly amusement centre accessible to people from all walks of life.
Two things have remained constant in the two decades since the park was thrown open – one, the boat ride in the Hussain Sagar with a stop at the Buddha statue to click a selfie and other is the children’s play area which comes alive with the excited squeals of tiny tots. With a water cascade, swings, pop up fountain and a merry go round, it is choc-a-bloc with a gaggle of kids present at all times.
The boats (with interesting names like Bhagmati, and Mehr-un-Nissa) provide a trip around the lake in 20 minutes while the bigger ones can be rented out for private gatherings. Small kiosks selling souvenirs and knick knacks (especially mugs and calendars with pictures) are popular with the visitors.

The musical fountain and the wide variety of flowering plants ensure that the park offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. The synchronised fountains generally sway to popular numbers from Telugu films and are a big hit, especially with children.
The laser show here (in the evenings) still remains an attraction. The auditorium in which the show is held can seat upto 2000 people and it creates a virtual 3D city right in the midst of the park. Narrating the story of Hyderabad, it remains a highlight though it has remained unchanged over the years. Special mention must be made of the fact that the premises are both clean and green (with a fine for littering) ensuring that the place remains appealing irrespective of the big number of footfalls.
Providing a respite from the mall-movie routine over the weekends, Lumbini Park remains a relevant adda to drop in over the weekends, especially in the monsoons with a butta for company!
