Hyderabad has emerged as one of the safest cities in the country with the city being ranked 14th in terms of crime rate among 19 metropolitan cities with a population of over 2 million for the year 2016. According to the data released by National Crime Records Bureau in Delhi on Thursday by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the number of crimes in Hyderabad has declined from 18,940 in 2014, 16,965 in 2015 to a low of 16,742 in 2016.
The NCRB logged the number of crimes based on IPC sections invoked by the police station officials. If crimes under special and local laws are factored in, Hyderabad emerges as second most safe city with 18th rank.
Delhi has the dubious distinction of being the crime capital as well, followed by Kochi and Jaipur. Coimbatore is the safest among the metros being ranked 19th with a crime percentage of .6 among the big cities. In percentage terms, Hyderabad's share of crimes is 3.3%, while Delhi has a lion’s share of 38.8%. However, the number of human trafficking cases recorded in Hyderabad marred the record. While the number of cases recorded under IPC Sections 370 and 370 (A) (human traficking) recorded in Delhi stood at 166, Hyderabad was second with 116 cases out of the total 380 cases recorded in metropolitan cities in the country.

However, Telangana has been ranked fourth for cyber crimes though the number of cases has also shown a declining trend. Based on cyber crime rate, Hyderabad has been ranked 9th with Jaipur having the dubious distinction of having the highest cyber crime rate and a rising trend.
In contrast, Hyderabad has shown a declining trend with 386 cases being registered in 2014 and 291 cases in 2016.
The number of cyber crimes has dipped from 703 in 2014 to 593 in 2016. The percentage share of cyber crimes stood at 4.8% for the State. A majority of the crimes logged in were under Section 66 (B, C, D, E). No crimes were recorded under Section 66F (cyber terrorism) in the State.

While illegal gains were the main motiviation for cyber crimes with 267 cases, revenge was the motivation in 217 cases out of the total 593 cases registered in 2016.
