Congress leader seeks direction to DGP to furnish details of cases registered against him

Justice A.V. Sesha Sai on Friday directed Congress leader A. Revanth Reddy’s counsel and the Telangana State counsel to study the recent Supreme Court order on disqualification of politicians facing criminal charges with regard to a writ petition filed by Mr. Reddy seeking to know from the government the criminal cases filed against him.

Mr. Reddy moved the High Court seeking a direction to Telangana DGP and the State to furnish details of the criminal cases registered against him. He explained in his petition that he had to disclose those details in the nomination form for contesting the elections.

The petitioner claimed that he had approached the DGP through Right to Information Act seeking details of criminal charges against him, but could not secure any information. He sought a direction to the DGP to furnish those details and a clarification from the ECI if it would suffice if the contestant presented details available with him or her. The ECI’s counsel said that the Apex court had recently made certain observations as to how contestants can submit details of criminal cases that they were facing in the verdict on disqualification of politicians facing criminal charges. These observations would help in deciding upon the issue raised by Mr. Reddy, the counsel said. The hearing was posted to Monday.
