A Division Bench of A.P. High Court comprising acting Chief Justice N. V. Ramana and Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar on Monday declared that the court wanted a system to be put in place from the new academic year to prevent suicides by students.
The Bench was dealing with a writ petition following reports in the media about student suicides in the city. It issued notices to all the local universities, IIT and UGC. Senior counsel D. Prakash Reddy was requested by the court to assist in this case.
NALSAR University of Law had come forward to conduct a seminar on April 20. When the case came up for hearing on Monday, the Bench inquired about the seminar. On being informed that the Vice Chancellor of Osmania University did not attend the meeting, the Bench expressed displeasure. One of the impleading parties had requested time till June.

The Bench said it wanted to set the ball rolling by the beginning of the next academic year and remarked that none was ready to grapple with the situation which was reaching alarming proportions. The case will be heard on April 23.
IMG Bharata
The Bench directed the registry to post the writ petition pertaining to IMG Bharata case before another Bench. It may be recalled that there were allegations that prime lands were given allegedly for sports facility during the TDP regime. The YSR government had ordered a CBI inquiry. The present writ petition has been filed seeking a CBI inquiry and Billy Rao, the alleged beneficiary is seriously contesting the mater. The Bench said it would be appropriate that another Bench hear the case.

Tree felling
The Bench ordered notices in a writ petition complaining of illegal felling of huge trees from Tirupati to Bangalore. The writ petition was filed by one Lokanadham, who said the authorities were resorting to indiscriminate felling of trees in violation of rules.
