GHMC to push for compost pits in gated communities

The GHMC has instructed its circle level officials to get compost pits established in all gated communities in their jurisdiction by this month-end.

In a review meeting held with the medical, transport and engineering wings, GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy has asked all deputy commissioners and Assistant Medical Officers of Health to ensure that the gated communities set up compost units on their premises.

“We wish to portray the gated communities as a model for others to emulate. Achieving adherence at individual level is tough, but with gated communities, we hope it will be easier,” Mr. Reddy said.

Besides, residents living in apartment complexes will find few uses of such compost units, but gated communities would need more manure than they could ever produce to tend to the landscape, he surmised.

Earlier, GHMC had invoked solid waste management rules to enforce compost pits on the premises of bulk generators, which is yet to be complied with by many.

Mr. Reddy also directed the officials to ensure at least 10 lakh downloads of the ‘Swachh Dhooth App’ and urged the sanitation staff to play a vital role in achieving that goal. He asked the town planning, engineering and sanitation officials to coordinate for the lifting of construction debris in the respective circles.
