Festive finery keeps with fashion trends

It’s something like old wine in new bottle. Customary dresses in newer styles are a rage this Ramzan. With the shopping at Pathergatti, the commercial hub of old city, picking up in the run up to the festival there is a rush to lap up traditional costumes sporting new looks.

Many youngsters are still hooked to the customary wear like ‘Pathani’, ‘Lucknowi’ and regular ‘kurta- pyjamas’ or ‘shalwars’. And cashing upon the trend, many showrooms are now offering the age-old traditional finery in newer style.

The most prioritised ‘Pathani’ dress with newer collar and cuff designs like ‘V’ collar, shawl collar and full collar are the in-thing and is being most sought after. It is priced between Rs.1,200 and Rs. 4,000 depending on the fabric and embroidery work.

Likewise, hand embroidered ‘kurtas’ are quite popular this season. A regular ‘kurta pyjama’ with simple embroidery work is available for anywhere between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500 and ones with heavy work is priced between Rs. 1,200 and Rs.6, 000. This apart, ‘Patiala salwar’ is also a hit, Mohammed Shukoor of Modern dresses at Falaknuma says.

“Youngsters are on lookout for newer stuff every Ramzan and to meet the demand some innovations are done in the traditional wear. It could be a newer pattern of collar, cuff or pockets,” Maqdoom Mohiuddin Khan of Maqdoom Big Boss, a traditional wear store, at Pathergatti says.

As usual the ladies apparels stores have also geared up for the season. The ‘Anarkali’ dress, a full frock in local parlance, little or heavily embroidered has made a comeback. Bold and bright colours are most preferred when it comes to the ‘Anarkali’ dress followed by other.

“The dress is embroidered with using different silk threads and imitation diamond stones of varied colours and sizes are embedded on it,” says Mohammed Sajid of Akhtar Collection at Charminar. It is priced between Rs. 1500 and Rs. 30,000 depending upon the work. The regular three piece suits are also big hit, he adds.

Laad Bazaar market also offers a variety of stuff. Keeping with the concept of offering something new, a few sets of glass and lac bangles named after the popular television serials are a star attraction, Mohd Fareed of Femina Bangles explains.
