There will be some relief for commuters travelling towards Hi-Tech City from Mehdipatnam through Biodiversity Junction as the second level unidirectional flyover at the junction was inaugurated on Monday by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

The over-990-metre three-lane flyover built at a cost of ₹69.47 crore is the fourth structure to be completed under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) to ease traffic congestion in the IT corridor. It starts from Raidurg police station on the Mehdipatnam-end and winds up near IKEA showroom towards Kukatpally-end.

Growing traffic

The Biodiversity Junction witnesses heavy vehicular movement with jams being a common feature due to the presence of many IT and ITES companies in the vicinity. About 14,000 vehicles pass through this route per hour and the number is expected to double by 2035, which necessitated the construction of the flyover. Motorists also use the junction to reach National Highway (JNTU end) from Old Mumbai highway.

The government is constructing flyovers in many areas to ease traffic congestion in the main junctions for signal-free smooth travel. The inauguration of the flyover at Biodiversity Junction will help commuters going from Mehdipatham towards Kutatpally in saving a lot of travelling time and help reduce traffic bottlenecks as they can head to Hi-Tec City without having to stop at the junction.

Other projects

Mr.Rama Rao also laid the foundation for a six-lane bi-directional second level flyover from Kondapur towards Outer Ring Road at Gachibowli junction, a four-lane bi-directional flyover from Shilpa layout to ORR near Gachibowli junction and a vehicular underpass across the existing godown road. These projects under the SRDP are estimated to cost ₹330 crore. These projects besides easing traffic congestion at Gachibowli junction will provide better connectivity between Hi-Tec City and the Financial District.

The inauguration and foundation laying ceremonies were attended by Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and MLA Arikepudi Gandhi among others.
