A city court on Thursday sentenced 40 motorists for a three-day imprisonment for driving in an inebriated condition. The errant motorists were caught during a special enforcement drive organised on Saturday last.
A total of 212 motorists were caught during the drive, of which 163 were driving two-wheelers, 46 four-wheelers, two auto rickshaws and one heavy vehicle. All motorists underwent a counselling session at Traffic Training Institute here and were later produced before the City Court, which sentenced them for a three-day imprisonment. These motorists were found with significantly higher Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), a traffic official said.
According to Motor Vehicle Act, a person can be booked for drink driving if his BAC levels cross 30 mg per 100 ml blood. They can be charged with a fine up to Rs. 2,500 and/or imprisoned for a period of up to six months. Till date, 263 people have been sentenced to undergo imprisonment and a total of 3,734 cases were booked during the current year.
