Dip in mishaps this festival season

It is mainly children and passers-by who sustain minor eye injuries, say doctors

Close to 32 Diwali revellers, a majority of them being children were treated for minor eye injuries at the State-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, between Saturday and Sunday, after they sustained while bursting firecrackers.

The hospital doctors said that barring three persons, the rest were given medication in the hospital’s outpatient block and discharged.

Lid edema

The three patients, Vishnu (10) from Ranga Reddy district, Raju (25) and Fayaz (25) from Amberpet, were admitted to the hospital for lid edema, a condition in which the eyelids get swollen, and haemorrhage, when small blood vessels in the eyes break due and cause a red spot.

According to doctors the condition of the three is stable.

“We have observed that most of the injured were passers-by, who got injured accidentally when the firecrackers went-off and there were very few patients, who got injured while bursting firecrackers during the celebrations.

The three in-patients have received treatment and there is nothing to worry because they will regain their sight when the swelling subsides,” said Superintendent, S.D. Eye Hospital, Dr. P. V. Nanda Kumar Reddy.

Campaign

According to hospital doctors, consistent campaign by all safety aspects while celebrating Diwali has paid off.

“There is a definite drop in the numbers of the persons injured when compared to last two years.

“Diwali revellers are definitely appreciating the importance of taking safety precautions now,” Dr. Nanda Kumar added.
