Denied ration, woman sets herself ablaze

Depressed over not getting her monthly quota of ration, a housewife committed suicide at Jeedimetla on Saturday, the police said.

The woman, Renuka (34), who was working as a sweeper with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and living along with her mother at Mahalaxmi Colony in Jeedimetla.

On Saturday, the woman went to the ration shop where the ration dealer asked her to come in the evening.

The woman reportedly got depressed, as for the last one week she was making rounds of the ration shop for 12 kg of rice, which she gets under the Public Distribution Scheme.

“Renuka left the ration shop and went home. She lighted a matchstick and set herself ablaze,” Jeedimetla Inspector A. Chandrasekhar said while quoting her relatives.

Her neighbours on hearing her cries rushed her to the Gandhi Hospital where she died while undergoing treatment in the evening.
