A convict who was about to complete his jail term attacked and killed a fellow prisoner after injuring four others, because he did not wish to get released from jail. This bizarre incident was reported from Swarnamukhi barrack of the prison at Cherlapally on the city outskirts on Wednesday morning.
Prison officials are enquiring as to how the convict, D. Narsimha, managed to get hold of a pair of scissors with which he attacked the prisoners around 4 a.m. There were 19 prisoners in the ward at that time. While some were still asleep, some had gone out to the bathroom, while some were walking in the corridor, when Narsimha went berserk. Alerted by their cries, the prison guards rushed in and tackled him.
By the time the guards overpowered him, he stabbed six prisoners. They were rushed to Gandhi Hospital and one of them, K. Venkaiah (58), was declared dead on arrival, while Chalapathi (45) is battling for his life. The condition of another prisoner, Ooshaiah, who suffered three injuries, is stated to be progressing.

Three others -- Ismail, Venkata Swamy and Basavaiah -- were treated as out-patients. Venkaiah was a life convict and recently recovered from a bout of swine flu.
Narsimha of Nizamabad is serving a seven-year term for attempting to kill his wife, harassing her for dowry and under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. His term is nearing completion and he would have been released three months later. He was in Cherlapally prison for the past four years.
“My wife will get me killed. This attack will help me remain in prison,” the prison superintendent, K.L. Srinivasa Rao, quoted him as saying.
