Climate change, particularly the increase in temperatures, over the last decade has impact on the monsoon with increased rains over Central India, Elena Surovyatkina, a scientist with Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research of Germany, said here on Tuesday. At a workshop on ‘Monsoon Prediction on Central India under Climate Change’ in Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, she said the climate change was also impacting the withdrawal of monsoon by delaying it. Besides, industrialisation and urbanisation also have impact on the monsoon, she noted. Stating that arrival of monsoon could be predicted 40 days in advance this time Prof. Surovyatkina said they had identified conditions in the Eastern Ghats and North Pakistan with potential to impact monsoon.
Vemulawada legislator Ch. Ramesh urged the scientists to take up research to provide accurate information on monsoon to the farming community, particularly in Telangana. Research Director R. Jagadishwar, Extension Director D. Raji Reddy, Additional Director of Agriculture Vijay Kumar and others also spoke at the workshop organised by the Water Technology Centre of PJTSAU.
