'Clean coast key for protection of marine environment'

Speakers at the inaugural function of the International Coastal Day celebrations organised by the Indian Coast Guard Station at Krishnapatnam stressed the need for protection of marine and coastal environment by ensuring cleanliness along the coast.

The participants in the programmes took part in activities like collecting and removing wastes and non-biodegradable materials littered along the coast. The objective was also to create awareness among local populations.

The event was conducted as part of the South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) under the UN environment programme on the third Saturday of September every year along the Indian Coastal line. It was organised in association with the Krishnapatnam Port Company LTD.

The cleanup activity was carried out along the Krishnapatnam beach after District Collector N. Srikant flagged off the event. The volunteer groups comprised the serving staff members and family members of the Indian Coast Guard, Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited, 24 (A) Bn, EME NCC and 10 (A) Naval Unit NCC cadets of Nellore, Krishnapatnam Security Force personnel, Coastal Security Police personnel, students from ZPPH School, RR School from Muthukur and TREE foundation. A similar was also organised at Mypadu beach.

The main aim to rope local communities in their endeavor to remove debris from the beaches. The programme was presided over by Commandant G. Venu Madhav, Commanding Officer, ICGS, Krishnapatnam.
