Rows of monitors beep vital signs, gurneys with smooth rollers, mobile X-ray unit and a central control station. The newly-inaugurated 65-bed Intensive Care Unit at the Gandhi Hospital is all this and more.
Built at a cost of about ₹5.5 crore, the centralised ICU was inaugurated on Thursday by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in the presence of Telangana Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy to the chant of Divya Prabhandam by Parthasarathy Aiyangar.
“When the electricity goes off the patients or the doctors will not even know that the system is functioning with backup electricity,” Gandhi Hospital Superintendent O. Shravan Kumar informed Mr. Narasimhan when he enquired about it.

Centralised AC
The ICU has central AC, oxygen supply and lighting. “We want to provide the best medicare to the poor that is on par with what is available at corporate hospitals. We have plans to expand ICUs of this class to all the districts in the state. But the onus lies with patients as well as doctors that the environment in the hospital remains like this and does not deteriorate,” said Mr. Reddy after the inaugural function.
“I want to say that this facility is not just for the poor but for everyone. It should bring back people’s faith in doctors at public medical facilities. This should be the beginning of Government Public Partnership with people helping the government maintain facilities. If there are frequent visits by government officials and monthly and quarterly reviews by the Health Minister we will be able to maintain quality,” said Mr. Narasimhan in his remarks.
