‘Cantonment orphaned by Centre, State’

October 27, 2017 08:08 am | Updated 08:08 am IST - HYDERABAD

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board has not been receiving any funds from either the State or the Central government for the last three years, though the Board was under the control of the Defence Ministry.

The Board has been forced to depend totally on its local resources, though the Defence establishments make it a point to ensure their authority by blocking the roads for civilians, once in a while, CPI(M) Central City secretary M. Srinivas alleged, citing the information he obtained from the Cantonment Board under the Right to Information Act.

No new developmental activities were being taken up for paucity of funds, he alleged.

The Board was spending only 30 per cent of its income on water supply and 30 per cent more on sanitation. The State government is not devolving the Cantonment’s share of professional tax and motor vehicle tax.

The party, through a press release, demanded that the Centre and the State allocate budget for the Cantonment Board.
