The State Election Commission (SEC) has notified the election for conducting by-election to the Borabanda municipal division of the GHMC on March 17.

With this, the model code of conduct has come into force in the entire area coming under the municipal corporation.

The election got necessitated following the unseating of Congress corporator G. Vanaja by the High Court as she had more than two children. As per the Municipal Act, a person having more than two children (after 1995) would be disqualified from election or from continuing as member.

It will be the second bypoll to the municipal corporation after the one held for Kukatpally when the sitting corporator died. Another corporator from Langar Houz B. Ravi Yadav belonging to the Majlis party too was disqualified for the same reason.

However, the HC allowed the runner-up in the municipal poll for the division C. Uday Kumar of the BJP to be sworn in as the corporator.

The Majlis party had tried every means, including approaching the Supreme Court and also ensuring the general body meeting is not held, to prevent Mr. Kumar from becoming a member, but in vain.
