Realising it cannot monitor each and every construction for adherence to approvals; the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to involve neighbours in keeping an eye on building deviations in the city.
Accordingly, any person taking up new construction has to also provide the basic details related to the building permissions to the neighbours and display the same on a board at the site.
Speaking to presspersons after the weekly ‘Prajavani’ programme here on Monday, GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said the idea was to involve the local residents in monitoring building works and check deviations from approved design or violations of rules.

“In the town planning process, we have realised that neighbours are important stakeholders and if involved and equipped, they can bring building violations to our notice,” he observed.
On sanitation works in the city, the Commissioner conceded that there was a lot to be improved and said initiatives were being taken up for this. “Senior officials have been given a circle each to monitor sanitation works and they will visit their designated circles from 6 a.m. every day,” he said.

Penalty
The municipal corporation would also take a serious view of littering of streets and would not hesitate to act against those indulging in such practice.
“We have seen traders opening their business establishments in the morning and dumping the garbage on streets,” he said.
There were provisions for imposing penalty on those littering the streets,he said adding, “Punishment is not our intention but we want citizens to cooperate in keeping the city clean.” Mr. Somesh Kumar promised improved road conditions by December-end.
All zonal commissioners were asked to prepare reports on road conditions and other works to be taken up. The option of giving road works on an annual maintenance contract basis was also being considered, he added.
