P.V. Sindhu of India won the women's singles gold in the Commonwealth Youth Games badminton championship in Scotland on Sunday with a 22-20, 21-8 win over Sonia Cheah of Malaysia in the final, according to information received here.

This is the first major gold at the international level for the Hyderabad shuttler, sponsored by BPCL and Olympic Gold Quest. “I am delighted to win this title. I dedicate this gold to you (parents) and my coach Gopi Sir,” Sindhu told her parents P.V. Ramana and P. Vijaya (both former international volleyballers) — from Scotland.

India's chief national coach Pullela Gopi Chand felt it was a remarkable win by the 16-year-old shuttler.

“This shows her growing maturity in playing big events. No doubt, she is one of the favourites from India to emulate what Saina Nehwal has achieved in the big league,” Gopi said.
