Attempts to stalk and attack the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar were made even before the Thursday attack when shoes were hurled at him during his speech at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram. On Wednesday, while Kanhaiya was returning from the University of Hyderabad (UoH), a few hooligans on motorbikes followed the car he was travelling in, and tried to attack him, the Communist Party of India’s city secretary D. Sudhakar revealed.

“Somewhere near Toli Chowki, they tried to throw stones at the rear windshield, but missed the target. Kanhaiya Kumar was sitting in the back seat, and would have been hurt severely had the stones hit the glass,” Dr. Sudhakar said. However, the party decided not to give much importance to this incident, hence no police complaint was filed.

“About the fresh attack too, we did not file any complaint. That was sheer craziness of a few persons. But the police said they would file an FIR taking suo motu cognizance of the crime,” Dr. Sudhakar informed.
