Apollo Hospital opens geriatric clinic

Hospital plans five such clinics in metros later

Apollo Hospitals inaugurated a geriatric clinic for elderly healthcare at its Jubilee Hills campus here on Wednesday.

Shortage of geriatric specialists due to preference in the medical fraternity for other fields of medicines, has been a long-standing problem. This issue has persisted despite an increase in the ageing population and increased life-span. Doctors who state the need for dedicated elderly care often cite multiple complications in aged patients that can be better addressed with multiple dedicated facilities under one roof.

“Geriatric clinic will provide comprehensive care addressing their medical, psychological, rehabilitative needs. Besides focusing on treating the elderly will majorly lay thrust on preventive care even before they have a problem,” said Vasanth Kumar, a geriatric consultant at the hospital group.

The hospital plans on opening five such clinics in the metros and later, in more than 60 of its hospitals across the country.

“This clinic is proactive and works towards preventive care, with all needed facilities under one roof. Apollo Elder Care is a specialised service but functions as a personalised family doctor. The doctors and the support staff are trained to attend to the needs of the elderly in a patient and caring manner,” joint managing director of the hospital group Sangita Reddy said.

The clinic was inaugurated by noted film-maker K. Viswanadh.
