The Congress has announced the candidature of a former MLA and former president of its women’s wing in the State, Akula Lalita, for the lone seat it is expected to win. She will become the first woman of Telangana Legislative Council if she wins as there are no women in the Upper House at present.
Ms. Lalita will file her nomination on Thursday, the last day, after a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party. The announcement of her name by the party high command led to a backlash as Danam Nagender, who sulked over denial of chance, reportedly contemplated resigning as the president of Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee.
Meanwhile, TRS president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao met his Cabinet colleagues in the evening to consider names of party candidates. A meeting of the polit bureau of TDP was also held to discuss names. While Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari and Roads & Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao were sure to contest on behalf of TRS, other names in the party doing rounds for the remaining three seats included K. Yadava Reddy, M. Srinivas Reddy and B. Venkateswarlu.
