AIMIM may back Meira Kumar

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen is most likely to support United Progressive Alliance’s candidate Meira Kumar in the Presidential polls to be held on July 17.

AIMIM has seven MLAs in Telangana and two MLAs in Maharashtra. It also has one Member of Parliament.

The Party that accounts for 10 votes in total made the decision to support the UPA candidate at a meeting held in the city on Saturday. AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi did not meet UPA’s Presidential candidate Meira Kumar during her visit to the city on July 3. The party had severed ties with its former ally Congress in the State after the formation of Telangana in 2014.

AIMIM’s decision to support the UPA candidate will place the party at loggerheads with its ally, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

TRS has decided to support National Democratic Alliance’s Presidential candidate, Ram Nath Kovind.

The party supported Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature in the last Presidential election in 2012. It, however, did no cast its vote in 2007 as Ms. Pratibha Patil, UPA’s Presidential candidate was mired in controversy over her comments on Abaya or traditional wear of Muslim women.
