About 60 accident-prone areas identified in the city and rectified

The police have claimed that interventions at about 60 accident-prone areas in the city have helped cut down the number of road traffic accidents.

According to V. Ravinder, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, there were 50 fewer accidents this year until the month of May compared to 2016. Until last May, traffic police data suggests that 173 road traffic accidents took place within Hyderabad City Police limits. This year the number stands at 123.

“The number of accidents is lower this year so far. We identified about 85 accident-prone locations in the city. Interventions including use of signage, rumblers and re-engineering of the stretches have helped reduce the number of incidents,” Mr. Ravinder said.

The 85 locations including Military Dairy Farm Road, Trimulgherry Crossroad, Mettuguda Road, Tadbund stretch, Jubilee Hills Road No 45, Road No 1 Banjara Hills near Vengal Rao Park and also the site of Tuesday’s fatal car crash on Road No 3 Banjara Hills.

“At 15 or 20 locations where re-engineering is required, the GHMC is working on it,” the police officer added.

Just a little ahead from spot of Tuesday’s accident on Road No 3 Banjara Hills, rash driving by a driver allegedly in a state of drunkenness had claimed three lives, including that of 10-year-old Ramya. In a manner remarkably similar to Tuesday’s accident, the car that killed Ramya and two of her family members had landed on their car on the opposite of the road after hitting the divider at a high speed.
