Six killed, 11 hurt in road accident

In yet another ghastly road accident, six persons were killed and 11 others grievously injured when the auto-rickshaw in which they were returning home from a pilgrimage was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Yellareddygudem on the Narketpally-Addanki highway in the early hours of Saturday.

All the victims hailed from poor families of Charakonda village of Vangur mandal in Mahabubnagar district.

They were proceeding to their native place after an overnight stay at Cheruvugattu hill shrine when the accident occurred.

According to the police, an unidentified vehicle said to be a lorry hit an overcrowded auto-rickshaw carrying 16 passengers on the outskirts of Yellareddygudem on the State highway at about 5.30 a.m. The lorry sped away soon after the collision, sources said.

Victims

E. Venkataramulamma (45), her sons E. Edaiah (12) and E. Ashok (10), besides K. Ramesh (18) and A. Venkaiah (30) died on the spot. K. Lalitha (15), succumbed to the injuries later. The injured including two children were shifted to the district headquarters hospital. The Narketpally police registered a case and were investigating.
