The South Central Railway (SCR) netted a whopping Rs. 1.2 crore towards penalty in anti-littering drives during the fiscal 2013-14, apprehending a total of 60,935 persons for violating rules on railway premises across all the six SCR divisions.
A release said that the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, effective November 2012, authorised the administration to penalise any person/passenger found littering, spitting or answering calls of nature, pasting posters or dumping garbage, with a penalty of up to Rs. 500.
Another press release said the scheme for upgrading waitlisted passengers, was extended to cover sitting accommodation too. Accordingly, the scheme of upgrading full fare-paying waitlisted passengers to the next higher class against vacant accommodation has been extended to those having only sitting accommodation, to reserved second class, AC chair car or from AC chair car to executive class.
