Rangarajan calls for reforms in higher education

Former Reserve Bank of India Governor and now Chancellor of Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) C. Rangarajan stressed on four focus areas — modernisation of the syllabus, reform of the examination system, efficient teaching, and attitude of the students — for promoting quality in higher education in India.

Delivering the sixth convocation address of ICFAI University here on Friday, Dr. Rangarajan said the time has come for some radical changes in higher education. Though the “excellent” quality of the best students of Indian universities and colleges is well recognised, the average students are still a cause for concern, he noted.

Three dimensions of the higher education are access, equity and quality, Dr. Rangarajan said. Broadening the access is extremely important in view of the low gross enrolment ratio, and equity is vital in order to ensure that underprivileged communities shared the benefit of education. Private universities need to pay more attention to access and equity by evolving an appropriate financing mechanism for meritorious students from economically poor backgrounds.

Chief guest former chairman of Hindustan Unilever S.M. Datta noted that management by strategy has become an essential choice in order to ensure long-term profitable survival and growth of a company. Businesses need the sanction and protection of society to survive and thrive, and hence, the need for environmental concerns and conformity with regulations, Mr. Datta said to a group 1,438 graduating students, including 516 girls. Students from MBA, BBA, B.Tech, and BBA-LLB (Hons.) streams and research scholars were awarded their certificates. Gold and silver medals were presented for academic and all-round excellence.
