July 05, 2010 04:18 pm | Updated 04:18 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

A 27-year-old pregnant woman from Jiyaguda-Karimunnisa, who tested positive for swine flu, died at the Gandhi Hospital on Saturday. With this, the total number of swine flu deaths since June of this year has reached five, of which two were pregnant women. Karimunnisa, who was nine months pregnant, is the first swine flu patient from twin cities to have died of swine flu.

District health authorities informed that Karimunnisa was first taken to Owaisi Hospital and later on shifted to Gandhi Hospital. Doctors informed that the patient was brought at an ‘advanced' stage and despite their best efforts could not revive her. The relatives of the deceased have already been identified and as a precautionary measure were given enough doses of swine flu drug, authorities added. Till now, since January of this year, 35 cases have tested positive of which 16 were from the capital. On Sunday, authorities informed that five samples from patients, with swine flu like symptoms, were collected and tested at Institute of Preventive Medicine. All the samples tested negative.

Doctors advised public, especially pregnant women, to continue taking precautionary measures and contact a doctor in case flu like symptoms persist. Authorities maintained that the swine flu situation is still under control and there is no need for public to panic.
