The month-long Jangubai pilgrimage of Adivasis in the region constituting undivided Adilabad district started on Saturday with the ‘Devve Niruswal’ of lighting of the lamp.

The lamp representing the goddess is placed inside the cave temple located on the face of a cliff in picturesque surrounding of the Kota-Parandoli gram panchayat in Kerameri mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district.

A darbar, on the lines of the one held at Nagoba Jatara, will be held on New Year’s day.

Tribe elders and leaders will address the pilgrims who arrive mostly from Adilabad and neigbouring areas in Maharashtra.

Members of Raj Gonds, Kolams and Pardhan tribes perform the annual pilgrimage which falls during the sacred month of Poos or Pushya. They arrive in caravans of bullock carts and spend a night at the place devoting themselves to performing puja and feasting at the site.

A caravan, consisting of Adivasi families of a given village, can take three days to reach the cave temple and an equal number of days to get back to the village. The priests of eight clans of Raj Gonds perform puja at the cave temple.
