As part of the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project taken up with aid to the tune of Rs.310 crore from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), work on setting up Interception and Diversion (I&D) structures at five inlets to the lake is in progress.
According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials, the work for I&D are in progress at Picket Nala, Balkapur Nala, Fatehnagar, Prakashnagar and Necklace Road. “We hope to be able to commission these structures in a month's time,” says the Member Environment, Sunil Kumar Gupta.
Apart from these, the work has been going on other aspects of the project that promise to clean the lake of its accumulated pollution and also prevent further inflow of pollutants.

For that purpose, sewerage treatment plants (STP) and also up-gradation of existing one is on.
The project looks at improving lake water quality by preventing the entry of pollutants both at point source and non-point sources, removal of nutrient rich sediments at lake bed and improve the overall lake environment and its surroundings for enriched biodiversity.
The construction works include ring sewers around the water body, 5 MLD sewerage treatment plant at Rangadhamini Cheruvu, trunk sewers and also recycled water supply facilities.

The lake and nala improvement works involve dredging and disposal of sediments, construction of alternative idol immersion places, repair of surplus weir, installation of aeration equipment and shoreline improvement.
“In different stages of completion, these works when completed will ensure that sewage flow into the lake is checked,” Mr. Gupta added.
