The city’s churches reverberated with prayers as devotees gathered in large numbers to observe Good Friday. While some churches began the observance early on Thursday evening, most others conducted special prayer sessions on Friday morning.
Christ was crucified on Good Friday in the afternoon and was said to have died three hours later, I.B.V. Augustine, Secretary of the Millennium Methodist Church said.
“To mark this occasion, we conducted Mass from 11.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” he said. Good Friday also marks the end of the period of observance called Lent.

“Lent is observed by many devotees according to their own capabilities. During the 40-day long period, devotees abstain from delicacies they are fond of,” G. Aloysious, an octogenarian, said. Mr. Aloysius and his wife observed the period by eating only once a day.
The religious programmes started in the morning in various churches.
“Events observing the day started from Thursday evening and people thronged the premises in large numbers,” a representative of St. Mary’s Church said. The day drew to a close in some churches with the distribution of sweetmeat , while programmes, including cultural shows, plays and songs, stretched till late night at others.
