Engineering aspirants in Telangana may heave a sigh of relief, with seats in top engineering colleges, including government institutes, to be left open, as IIT and NIT aspirants cannot block the seats like they did the previous years.

The admissions into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) will be completed much before admissions into Telangana institutes begin this year, with the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for IITs and NITs releasing the schedule.

The admission schedule will begin from June 24 and the first round of seat allotment will be done on June 30. There will be four rounds of admissions, and they are likely to be completed before July. The JEE (Main) ranks will be released on June 23, while the JEE (Advanced) ranks have already been released.
As per the Telangana engineering admission schedule, certificate verification will begin on June 22 and will be completed by July 1 for all rank holders.
Though officials are yet to announce dates for exercising the web option for choosing the college and the seats of students’ choice, the procedure is likely to start after the seat allotments are done in IITs and NITs.
No overlapping
Officials say this will ensure that there is no overlapping, unlike previous years when the IIT and NIT admissions were delayed and several ranker holders first chose the seats in State engineering colleges and finally moved to IITs and NITs.
Last year, nearly 500 seats in government colleges went vacant after students preferred to move to IITs and NITs, and there is no option for spot admissions in government colleges.
Though seats in government colleges like OU College of Engineering and JNTU College of Engineering are considered premium, there was no chance for other students to choose those seats.
This year, delayed counselling is likely to curb such a situation, an official said.
Lower ranked students in JEE (Advanced) and JEE (Main) may benefit with the early admissions, as they can participate in the Telangana admission schedule and choose the best institute if they don’t get their preferred choice of IITs or NITs.
Moreover, they will also benefit from sliding if top rankers prefer State engineering colleges for various reasons.
From this year, the JoSAA is allowing students to withdraw the seat after each round if they are not satisfied with the allocation and are not confident of securing a good seat in the subsequent rounds, a facility that was available last year. The counseling process began on July 1 last year, and there was not enough time for additional rounds. However, this year the process will go on for four rounds.
IIT and NIT admissions
The JoSAA will conduct counselling for 34,781 seats in 629 courses in 92 participating institutes, including the IITs, NITs and Centrally-funded technical institutes. Out of them, 17,171 seats are open for the general category, 8,626 for the Other Backward Castes (OBCs), 4,991 for Scheduled Castes, and 2,949 seats for Scheduled Tribes. All the four categories will have seats for the physically-challenged students.
