Bholakpur incident still haunts voters

November 22, 2009 08:31 pm | Updated 08:31 pm IST

Opposition parties are trying to rip apart ruling party with this weapon

All the eight divisions in Musheerabad constituency reflect the lower-middle class voters and a huge chunk of voters from slums. In fact, deaths occurring due to contamination of water a few months ago in Bholakpur division are a major weapon being used by both the Telugu Desam chief N. Chandrababu Naidu and Praja Rajyam chief K. Chiranjeevi in their speeches across the city. The deaths still haunt the locality people and the neighbouring divisions.

The conditions in all these divisions are worse one can say, whether it is narrow and pot-holed roads, perennially flowing drainage lines, and lack of hygiene or other basic amenities. Except Gandhi Nagar and Domalguda divisions, and parts of Ramnagar most areas of other divisions almost look like slums. Issues apart it's always the influence of local leaders that makes the difference to winning and losing.

Congress faces stiff competition despite the sitting MLA, T. Manemma belonging to the ruling party. Her win was attributed to large number of Muslim votes here but this time MIM has fielded candidates in most of the divisions. Moreover, Ms. Manemma was the first one to target GHMC Congress chief, D. Nagender during ticket distribution reflecting sorry state of affairs in the party here.

A few former Corporators like Kalpana Yadav from Congress, Jayaram Reddy of BJP, now in TRS are testing their luck again but there are several first time contestants. The State BJP chief, Bandaru Dattatreya resides in Ramangar and he may influence his party's chances in his division while TDP traditionally has some strong pockets but suffers from lack of good leadership at the lower level. Given the large number of slums, CPI and CPI (M) have managed to gain entry in some divisions. Though rebels and divisions within ruling party might hamper its chances, candidates prospects will depend on the kind of money spent in the last two days of elections.
