Ten-year-old P. Ramya was laid to rest at Amberpet crematorium on Sunday, amid intensely emotional scenes.

The child succumbed on Saturday to injuries sustained in an accident 10 days ago. The autopsy was performed on Sunday after the hospital where the child fought for life handed over the body. Ramya’s mother Radhika, who sustained multiple fractures in the accident and was hospitalised, had not seen her daughter since the accident.

On July 1, Ramya’s family, including her mother, two uncles and grandfather had come to take her home after her first day at school. When they were driving towards the upscale Banjara Hills area, a car coming in the opposite direction, driven allegedly by a drunk and unlicensed 20-year-old Shraveel, hit the divider and landed on their car. The crash killed Ramya’s uncle Rajesh who was at the wheel, while others sustained serious injuries. The child was put on life support, but her vitals were not stable, doctors said. When Ramya’s body was brought to Amberpet crematorium on Sunday, many members who had gathered, including neighbours, broke down.

Radhika was brought in an ambulance to bid her daughter a final farewell. The mother was not aware of her daughter’s condition until recently and was emotionally overwhelmed. Ramya’s younger sister waved her a final goodbye as the body was lowered into the grave.

“Four families have been plunged into darkness by the irresponsible act of drunken youngsters, whose educated parents allowed them to drive without a licence. The government has to teach them a lesson to deter others in the society from drinking and driving,” said an angry neighbour, recalling Ramya as a warm child who had charmed her entire neighbourhood.
