Two-wheeler drivers, pedestrians and persons using non-motorised vehicles most vulnerable

Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians are turning out to be the most vulnerable in fatal road accidents in Telangana State. Among those killed in road accidents in 2015 in the State, nearly 50 % are two-wheeler drivers, pedestrians and persons using non-motorised vehicles.

On an average, 19 lives are lost in 60 road accidents in the State every day. Majority of these accidents are reported from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., says Road Safety Additional DG T. Krishna Prasad.

In an analysis, Mr. Prasad said negligence and human errors by drivers along with failure of the road users in taking precautions were the important factors contributing to road accidents. Non-enforcement and non-compliance of road safety laws, poor design and construction of roads and lack of safety features in designing and manufacturing of vehicles too were causing road accidents.

Rate of accidents per 100 km is high on National Highways vis-a-vis State highways of Telangana State. Data of the year 2016 shows that 225 persons died on National Highways passing through the State per 100 km.

On the State Highways, 126 persons got killed in road accidents per 100 km during the same period. On other roads of the State, 58 persons were killed per 100 km. However, maximum number of deaths (3,465) were reported on other roads in the State. Apparently, the figure for other roads (which are also described as internal roads) was high because the length of these roads was highest in the State compared to that of National and State Highways.
