54 persons sent to jail for drunk driving

The Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Erramanzil here sentenced 54 persons to imprisonment for periods ranging from two to 20 days for drunk driving.

Those imprisoned were caught during a special drive taken up from December 4 to 8.

The Hyderabad Traffic police had filed 434 chargesheets against persons caught drunk while driving earlier this week. The court also suspended the driving licence of 13 persons for periods ranging from six months to one year and two licences were permanently cancelled. A total fine of ₹9.36 lakh was imposed on them. The accused were sent to the Chanchalguda Central Prison.

Officials said people caught and convicted for drunk driving were likely to face difficulties in securing government jobs, passport and visa clearance.

The violators committing the offence will be sent for counselling at the Traffic Training Institutions at Goshamahal and Begumpet.
