Post formation of Telangana, an amount of ₹20.4 crore has been collected as cess for the benefit of construction workers, said Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy on Tuesday.
Mr. Reddy was addressing a gathering at the May Day celebrations at Ravindra Bharathi where he spoke about the workers’ movement in Chicago in the 1880s leading to the eight-hour working day schedule.
The Home Minister pointed out that the Telangana government has provided ₹5 lakh insurance to around 14 lakh drivers, 20,000 home guards and 16,492 working journalists.

He also said ₹10 crore has been spent on skill development of workers.
Labour, Employment and Factories Principal Secretary Shashank Goyal and Labour Commissioner Ahmad Nadeem also spoke. At another event, CPI National Secretary K Narayana described the BJP government as “anti-worker” and said that the party will not agree to any changes in labour laws which the Centre is attempting to make. He was addressing an audience at the AITUC May Day celebrations.
Mr. Narayana said that communists, labour organisations and struggles have a close relationship and that the CPI will always stand for the rights of workers. CPI Telangana State Secretary C Venkat Reddy also addressed the gathering.
