Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would be distributing about 1.25 lakh clay Ganeshas throughout the city for this year’s Ganesh Festival, said Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy on Friday. Each of the five zones will be issued 25,000 clay idols for distribution through the zonal and deputy commissioners concerned.

Besides this initiative, it was already decided to give eight inch tall clay Ganeshas to the school and college going children this year. In addition, another 75,000 clay idols made with help of self-help groups were to be distributed. Clay Ganeshas of about six feet tall and other sizes were being made at different areas in the suburbs with details available on the GHMC website.

Giving relief to the residents of the localities near the Jawaharnagar municipal dump, the municipal corporation has completed construction of the diversion channel and storage pond for collection of leachate. Built at a cost of ₹1.83 crore, the channel and the newly created water body will protect the groundwater pollution especially in the villages of Haridaspalli and Chiryal.

The 339 acres dump came into existence in 2002 and about 14 million tonnes have got accumulated over the years while the leachate secretion from the waste has been flowing freely into the surrounding localities during rainy season. Local MLA Sashidhar Reddy and public representatives had earlier applied to the GHMC to provide a solution.

With the feeder channel and the storage pond, the discharge from the dump is to be diverted to the Gundlakamma lake.
