Heavy rains lashed Telangana districts on Sunday, inundating several villages in Ranga Reddy where the Kagna river and several streams and rivulets overflowed.
The authorities discharged 1.68 lakh cusecs of water from 24 gates in Jurala reservoir in Mahbubnagar and another 81,000 cusecs, mainly for power, from Srisailam. Further down Krishna river, however, the outflow was a mere 12,000 cusecs from left and right canals of Nagarjunasagar where the power generation was also stopped three days ago due to poor inflows.
All the units at the power stations at Jurala (234 MW) and Srisailam (1,670 MW) were in operation. Except 72,000 cusecs released after power generation and another 9,000 cusecs through Pothireddypadu head regulator and Handri Neeva lift-irrigation scheme, there was no discharge from spillway at Srisailam. The engineers at Srisailam said they will take a decision on lifting gates on Monday if the current trend of inflows continued.

Elsewhere in Mahbubnagar, the Errakunta tank at Madanapalli village in Bomraspet mandal breached and submerged 400 acres of paddy, red gram and maize crops. Water entered houses in villages near Parigi and Tandur in Ranga Reddy. Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy had to cancel his visit to a village near Tandur due to flooding.
The Kagna river marooned Veerashettipalli village in Tandur mandal as it flowed heavily. There was a blackout in the village for the past two days. Road communication from villages in Tandur to Hyderabad and Mahbubnagar was badly affected.
Vehicles were stranded on the highway for more than a kilometre when the EC stream overflowed at Nagarguda village in Shabad mandal of Ranga Reddy district. Mr. Mahender Reddy observed the intensity of the stream at KB Doddi village and ordered safety measures for people living in low lying areas.

Eighteen gates of Taliperu reservoir in Khammam district were lifted to release 90,000 cusecs of water into Godavari. The river touched a height of 27.7 ft near Bhadrachalam. It was likely to rise another 3 ft at the same place by Monday, officials said.
In Medak district, the Singoor project received flood since Saturday due to heavy rains in the catchment. The divisional engineer of the project L. Jagannath said 3,500 cusecs of water was received by Sunday morning. More inflows were expected if the rains continued. The project currently had 11.54 tmc ft water against 10 tmc ft at the same time last year. The water level was 518.9 feet.
There were sharp showers in Hyderabad too in the afternoon.
