Bangkok metro involved a lot of innovation and we are doing something similar, says N.V.S. Redd
A name synonymous with the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, N.V.S. Reddy says that he is the bridge between engineering and non-engineering aspect of the project. Having an association of more than ten years with the project, the managing director of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited shares the importance of integration, innovation and the involvement of various stakeholders in the project with Rahul Devulapalli. Here are the excerpts.
Going by the design, engineering or aesthetics, which international mass transit system does the Hyderabad Metro Rail closely resemble?
By and large, it is closest to the Bangkok metro. We will have an elevated system and open stations like theirs. There was a lot of innovation involved in the Bangkok metro and we are also doing something similar. Apart from that, the climate and street habits of both the places are same.

Any initiatives to involve youngsters or budding entrepreneurs in the project?
There is some disconnect between youngsters and the elders’ taste and that is why we are asking the young generation to give their opinion. One such initiative is inviting ideas on how to design kiosks for hawkers on the skywalks. We are also taking ideas for the beautification of the stations.
The Delhi Metro was in news for lack of proper and accessible toilet facilities sometime back. What about the toilet facilities in the Hyderabad Metro?
The toilets will be on the ground floor as well as on the concourse and upper levels. In this regard, we have to also see if any organisations come forward to extend support. However, there will be no toilets inside the metro rail.
Any plans to make public commuting easier to the metro stations?
We are trying to integrate public transport as well as the private ones like auto-rickshaws into the metro system. There will also be regular shuttles covering a radius of about 4 km to 5 km around every station. The concourse levels and skywalks leading to the station will also cover the nearby colonies and commercial establishments.
When can the citizens expect the first metro ride?
The first line will be thrown open to public on March 21, 2015.
