Young man shoots at cop, arrested

A young man who allegedly fired at a traffic policeman when he was caught along with his accomplice jumping a traffic signal on a motorcycle was arrested in Rajouri Garden here on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 4 p.m. when Head Constable Mahesh Kumar intercepted the two persons after they jumped the red light at Raja Garden. The accused initially attempted to bribe the policeman and offered him Rs.200. However, Mahesh enquired about their antecedents instead and also called up his colleague standing nearby.

The pillion rider then trained a firearm at Mahesh and pulled the trigger. The Head Constable escaped unhurt and managed to overpower one of the suspects with the help of Constables Singare and Vivek. The other accused managed to flee.

During interrogation, the accused identified himself as Sunil, a registered bad character from Andha Mughal. The police claim to have seized a firearm, four live cartridges and three chains from him. A hunt has been launched for his accomplice.
