Women police roped in for safety of DU aspirants

Cops held meeting with principals of DU colleges; an all-women PCR van deployed

Women constables on bike will patrol in and around North Campus for two months till the admission session ends.

The police held a meeting with principals of Delhi University colleges on Thursday in North Campus to discuss the security of women during the admission session.

The police have deployed only women constables both outside and inside the colleges for patrolling.

“We have deployed 50 women constables. There will be one all-women PCR with five constables and two women on bike patrol in the North Campus during the admission session. The deployment will continue for two months till the admission ends,” said Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

He also said, “We held a meeting with principals of various colleges and discussed the issues related to safety and security of students. As per the concern raised by principals, we have deployed women constables outside all colleges in North Campus.”

‘Himmat app’

The police have asked the college management to promote Delhi Police women safety app — Himmat among the women students during the orientation session.

Also, they have been asked to install CCTV cameras at college gates and also inside the campus.

“We are also reaching out to every women student visiting the campus during admission session and educating them to seek police assistance in case they feel unsafe,” he added.

Apart from women constables especially deployed for admission session, the regular beat staff will also be available in the area.

In plain clothes

“We have also deployed women constables in plain clothes to keep watch on eve-teasers and stalkers. They will be assisted by male constables in plain clothes. We have checked the functioning of CCTV cameras installed in North Campus and also directed the college staff to verify the status of the CCTVs,” the officer said.

Metro stations, bus stops

The police staff will also be present outside metro station and at bus stops, he added.

“The rickshaw puller and e-rickshaw drivers have been sensitised over the women safety issues by the local staff. The male policemen have been told to keep watch on unruly bikers and snatchers active in the area,” he added.

The purpose of putting all-women patrolling team on duty in campus area is to instil confidence among the women applicants.
