Incident in Shahdara; husband detained

A 28-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Shahdara district on Monday.

Her family members purportedly told the police that she committed suicide after her in-laws harassed her for dowry. The police said the victim, Deepensha, was found hanging inside her room at her in-laws’ place.

Her father Rakesh Sharma was informed by her in-laws that she had locked herself inside her room and was not opening the door.

The police were also informed. When the door was broken open, the woman was found hanging from the fan.

She had completed an MBA and wanted to work but wasn’t allowed to by her husband and in-laws, said the police.

The woman’s father told the police that his daughter married to Jitendra Sharma in November 2014.

“After her marriage, her in-laws kept demanding money on one pretext or the other. Around three months ago, I gave a cheque of ₹3.5 lakh to Deepensha’s in-laws for paying the loan instalment of their flat,” said Mr. Sharma.

Higher studies

He further alleged that his daughter wanted to pursue PhD but her husband, who works with a technical department of a news channel, asked her to pursue BEd instead and was unwilling to share the responsibility of taking care of their year-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

The woman’s husband and father-in-law have been detained. A case under Section 304B of the IPC (dowry death), punishable with a maximum term of life imprisonment, has also been registered.
