A 19-year-old woman allegedly schemed with two friends to commit a theft in her own house because she needed money to pursue her dream of becoming a model, which the parents did not support. The police have arrested all three accused.

Lock broken

On April 17, 44-year-old Sahab Singh, a resident of north-east Delhi’s Saboli Bagh, woke up to find the money and jewellery in his poseesion stolen. “I had gone to sleep on the terrace and when I came back to my room around 6 a.m., I saw my almirah lock broken. The cash and jewellery inside it had been stolen,” he told the police, adding that the money included ₹1.25 lakh that his father-in-law had given him for safekeeping.

Mr. Singh filed a police complaint and a case was registered under sections 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 457 (house-breaking by night to commit offence). The police started investigating and after questioning the family members, it was revealed that the daughter was disappointed with the family not allowing her to pursue her dream of becoming a model.

Friend confesses

“We started probing the angle and it was found that the girl was friends with one Vikas Sharma, who she knew through her brother. He revealed her involvement when questioned,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ajit Kumar Singla.

Accused Vikas told the police that the 19-year-old Class XII student studying in a private school is passionate about modelling but her family members were not supporting her. So she asked Vikas and another friend Akshay to help her steal the money.

“They hatched a plan as per which the girl stole money and articles from her house, which were later handed over to Vikas and Akshay,” said Mr. Singla.

According to the police, Vikas is a 19-year-old student pursuing Law and Akshay is a 20-year-old who has taken Class XII board exams. The police said they have recovered ₹3,08,000 along with gold jewellery.
